The Changing of The Worldââ¬â¢s Richest Man The name Bill Gates elicits strong opinions among many Americans. There is no arguing the fact that this man, this titan of innovation, has become a household name. Sometimes negative in nature, many of these opinions may have been formed years ago when Gates was a different man with different priorities. Bill Gates has not been one to solicit notoriety, so much about his private life remains unknown to many. Countless words have been written regarding his business dealings, personality traits and the formation of his computer empire Microsoft. But what do we know about Bill Gates the man? Interaction with Gates was often times uncomfortable for many of his employees. Bordering on an obsession, that unyielding combination of intellect, drive, ambition and vision provided Gates with successes attained by few other men. By 1993 Bill Gates had become the richest man in America. At the age of 37, Gates had amassed a personal fortune of 6.3 Billion (Haskins). Years of hard work, fierce competitiveness and strategic business maneuvering had paid off. Business dealings with Gates and Microsoft have even been referred to as ââ¬Å"entering a knife fightâ⬠(Rivlin). When creating a computer based handwriting system, Jerry Kaplan, describes Gates as initially friendly and Kaplan trusted him. Kaplan felt incredibly betrayed when Gates later announced a very similar product that would be in direct competition with his own (Time).
